  Landscape design

At the University of Sheffield, I have established and coordinate the Centre for Designed Ecology (CfDE). Hosted by the Department of Landscape , CfDE was initiated by Nigel Dunnett  and James Hitchmough .

Designed Ecology recognises the benefits of green infrastructure, yet challenges the current limitations of how this is applied. Designed Ecology enhances the interactions between nature and people in urban environments, using nature-based design to intervene in how and where these interactions take place.

Part of establishing the research centre was the creation of its website and managing global communications.

My experience of gardening started at the age of 7 years old, and having lived on three continents has given me valuable experience in learning to adapt design and planting to climate and spirit of place. I am a self-taught garden designer, and have completed online training to enhance specific knowledge and skills. I undertake selected private garden commissions, engaging in garden restoration, garden make-overs and design of new gardens.

  Garden design

To share my passion for horticulture I volunteered for the 2017 RHS schools programme: the Green Plan It challenge .  As a mentor to a  10-week schools design project, I had the wonderful opportunity to inspire young people to notice and enjoy how plants contribute to our health and well-being, and to encourage their participation.

The school won the Innovation Award for their design, and went ahead to construct and plant the garden in their school grounds. I was delighted to be able to facilitate some additional funding for the garden from the generosity of the Avon Gardens Trust.

Supporting community involvement in horticulture, I have set up a Green Gym in our village. The aims of the Green Gym are to encourage more people to be active outdoors, at the same time promoting teamwork and community resilience. Our village aims are to design and implement planting to serve as traffic calming measures, and to maintain walking paths through and around the village in a manner sensitive to nature conservation and our village's heritage features.
