The Cape Epic in South Africa is the premier mountain bike event on the professional and amateur circuit. It is a challenging adventure of 8 days testing technical skills and endurance. And an amazing amount of fun. I did not finish the 2006 race because of injury, but came back to complete the event in 2007 and 2008.

Monty Don has his Nellie I have my Kipling.  Named for Rudyard Kipling - poet, genius, explorer - my Kipling is always with me in the garden; for company, and reminders of time for tea, or when to stop for lunch.

When the Salvos were unable to come to our village to lead Christmas Carols around the tree in the village square, I launched the idea of our own Christmas choir. We have such talented musicians and singers in our village, one of whom even composed a bespoke Carol. I handed out sparklers and joined the chorus.

Joberg2C is a 9 day, 900km MTB stage race across South Africa. I used my training and participation in the race to sign up to raise funds for the Participate for Good, Mandela Day libraries campaign

The campaign converts shipping containers into libraries for rural communities. As a campaigner, I was given a set of kit to ride in, and there were tough sections when it was a reminder that I was doing this for 'more than me'.

My ambition to inspire people with plants naturally extends to bunches of flowers. I was delighted to be asked to do Alice's wedding flowers. She was an easy bride - decisive and consistent, and the fresh cottage flowers were the perfect match for the gentle rural setting.

Adventure racing was the most unusually enjoyable experience. Combining the disciplines of trail running, mountain biking and kayaking (freshwater and sea) with orienteering and rogaining, it is like an adult treasure hut. Events that I took part it ranged from 4 hours, to 16 hours, to 2 days, to 10 dyas - non-stop events, though the night, rain, snow and sun. Incredible.

I have mild synaesthesia that adds colour to my sense of taste. Literally.

My perception of flavours is linked to colours.

I created a wine list for a new restaurant where wine choices were motivated by the emotion that they invoked, and this was represented by colour. Cabernet Sauvignon is the colour brown, with a feeling of comfortable friendship. Prosecco is pale blue, the colour of light-hearted joy.
